In artificial turf, the term compaction is used in two contexts—one desirable, one not.
Desirable: compaction of the sub-base
Gravel and chippings are compacted layer by layer with a vibrating plate compactor so that the sub-base remains load-bearing and no dents form later. More in our guide Artificial Turf Substrate.
Undesirable: compaction of the infill
- due to load and dirt, the infill material becomes compacted on sports fields
- the surface becomes harder and water drains less effectively
- playing characteristics such as force reduction and ball rebound behaviour change
Regular deep cleaning provides a remedy, during which the infill is loosened and cleaned—see Artificial Turf Cleaning for more.
