Plate Compactor

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

A plate compactor compacts gravel, chippings, and sand through vibration. It is essential for a stable artificial turf substructure.

The plate compactor (also known as a vibratory plate) is a piece of construction equipment with a heavy base plate that vibrates via an unbalanced motor. This causes the material’s particles to pack together more tightly, making the ground load-bearing.

Use with Artificial Turf

For private gardens, plate compactors can be rented from a hardware store or construction equipment rental company. Without sufficient compaction, dents will later appear in the artificial turf. Find out more in our installation guide.
