TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Pile weight

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Pile weight indicates how many grams of fibre material per square metre are contained in an artificial grass. It is an indicator of density and material usage.

Pile weight (also known as yarn or fibre weight) measures the weight of the artificial grass fibres above the carrier fabric in g/m². This should be distinguished from total weight, which also includes backing and back coating.

What pile weight indicates

  • More fibre material usually means a denser, more hard-wearing lawn.
  • With the same pile height, products can be compared well.
  • However, a high weight alone does not guarantee quality.

Always consider pile weight together with stitch density, Dtex and fibre shape. You can find the key figures for our artificial grass in the product overview.
