Backing (Backing Fabric)

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

The backing is the base fabric of artificial turf into which the blades are tufted. Together with the backing coating, it determines dimensional stability and durability.

Backing refers to the backing fabric on the underside of artificial turf. The plastic blades are stitched into this fabric through a process called tufting. It usually consists of one or two layers of polypropylene fabric.

Why Backing Matters

A high-quality backing ensures that the artificial turf barely expands or contracts with temperature fluctuations. This prevents wrinkling and open seams. The backing coating is what permanently fixes the blades in the fabric.

What you should look out for

  • Double-layer fabric is more dimensionally stable than single-layer fabric.
  • Evenly spaced drainage holes or a water-permeable coating prevent waterlogging.
  • With recyclable systems, the backing and blades are ideally made from the same material family, which makes recycling easier.
