When an athlete runs or jumps, significant forces act on the joints and muscles with every step. Shock absorption describes as a percentage how much of this force the surface absorbs compared to concrete.
Measurement
Testing is conducted using a standardized falling weight, known as the “artificial athlete.” The permissible ranges are defined in testing specifications, such as DIN 18035-7 and the FIFA Quality program.
Factors Influencing Shock Absorption
- An elastic layer beneath the artificial turf
- Type and quantity of infill
- Compaction due to use and lack of maintenance
Over time, the infill compacts and the surface becomes harder. Regular loosening and deep cleaning counteract this effect.
