TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Infill (Filling Material)

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Infill is the material, such as quartz sand, cork, or granules, that is spread between the artificial grass blades. It stabilizes the blades and weighs down the surface.

Infill refers to material that is spread between the blades after installation. It weighs down the artificial turf, supports the fibers, and influences cushioning and playing characteristics.

Common Infill Types

  • Quartz sand: the classic choice for gardens – adds weight and stabilizes.
  • Cork and other organic fillings: natural alternative for sports fields.
  • EPDM or SBR granules: elastic, but regulated as microplastic.

Does Garden Turf Need Infill?

Many modern garden turfs require little to no sand. Whether sand infill is advisable depends on the product and its use – we will advise you on this during installation.
