XPE stands for “cross-linked polyethylene”. As a closed-cell foam, XPE is lightweight, water-repellent, and elastic. Under artificial turf, it is used as a shockpad or cushioning mat.
What is XPE foam used for?
- for shock absorption and increased force reduction on sports and play areas
- as fall protection under play equipment, depending on the critical fall height
- as a leveling and comfort layer on solid subsurfaces such as concrete
What to look for
For water to drain, the panels should be perforated or equipped with drainage channels. On large sports fields, an integrated elastic layer often handles this task. Learn more about construction and subsurfaces in the guide Artificial Turf Subsurface.
