Artificial Turf for Hockey

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Hockey turf is a short, very dense artificial grass on which the ball rolls quickly and evenly. In competitive sports, it is often irrigated.

Field hockey is played almost exclusively on artificial turf today. Hockey turf differs significantly from football or garden turf: the blades are short and very dense, ensuring the small ball rolls quickly and predictably.

Systems

  • Irrigated pitches: common in international elite sports, the surface is watered before the game
  • Sand-filled or sand-dressed pitches: used in amateur and school sports
  • Dry systems: gaining importance due to water consumption concerns

A hockey field measures 91.4 × 55 m. You can find more pitch size comparisons in our Football Pitch Size guide. For the care and cleaning of sports surfaces, please see Artificial Turf Cleaning.
