TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Fire Behavior

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Fire behavior describes how a floor covering reacts to fire. For artificial grass, it is particularly relevant for balconies, trade fairs, and events.

Artificial grass is made of plastic and is flammable. How strongly it reacts to a flame or heat radiation is tested as fire behavior and classified in Europe according to standard EN 13501-1.

Classes for Floor Coverings

Floor coverings are divided into classes from A1fl (non-combustible) to Ffl. Additionally, there is a smoke class (s1 = low, s2 = higher smoke development). The class an artificial grass falls into depends on the specific product and is stated in the manufacturer’s test certificate.

When Fire Behavior is Important

  • on balconies and roof terraces in multi-family homes
  • at trade fairs, in halls, and for event areas
  • in public buildings

If in doubt, ask for the product’s test certificate. In the garden: do not use grills, fire pits, or cigarettes directly on the artificial grass.
