Zeolite

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Zeolite is a natural mineral used as an infill material for artificial grass to bind odours, for example from dog urine.

Zeolite is a porous volcanic mineral with a very large internal surface area. It can absorb moisture and odour-causing substances such as ammonia. That is why it is used as a special infill for artificial grass areas where pets spend time.

Application and effect

  • is lightly sprinkled into the pile and brushed in
  • binds odours from urine before they settle in
  • can be partially regenerated by rain or rinsing, but needs topping up occasionally

Good to know

Zeolite is not a substitute for a permeable base structure or regular cleaning. With unfilled artificial grass, it should be checked whether adding an infill makes sense at all. For tips on urine and hygiene, see our guide Artificial Grass and Dogs.
