Pile height

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Pile height indicates how high the blades of an artificial lawn stand above the backing fabric. It is specified in millimetres.

The pile height (also called pile length) measures the length of the artificial grass blades from the backing to the tip of the blade. It is specified in millimetres and, for garden turf, is usually between around 20 and 45 mm.

Which pile height is right?

  • Short (up to approx. 25 mm): low-maintenance, ideal for balconies, patios and heavily used paths.
  • Medium (approx. 25–35 mm): the all-rounder for gardens with children and pets.
  • Long (from approx. 35 mm): a particularly lush, soft look for representative areas.

Longer blades require a high stitch density and good resilience so that they do not lie flat. You can find the pile height of all products in the comparison.
