TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Backing Coating

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

The backing coating fixes the artificial grass blades in the carrier fabric. It usually consists of latex or polyurethane.

After tufting, the blades are only loosely held in the backing. It is the backing coating on the underside that permanently bonds them to the fabric.

Latex or PU?

  • Latex: widely used and cost-effective.
  • Polyurethane (PU): particularly moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable, often used for high-quality turf.
  • Recyclable coatings: newer systems with single-material construction.

The coating significantly determines the tuft bind strength and thus the lifespan. For water drainage, it is either perforated or designed to be permeable – see Drainage.
