The gravel base layer is the foundation for artificial turf on natural ground. It consists of crushed stone with graded grain sizes, for example 0/32 mm, which interlocks well when compacted.
Construction
- Thickness in gardens usually about 5–8 cm, more for poor soil
- Layer-by-layer compaction with a vibratory plate compactor
- Followed by a leveling layer of crushed sand or fine crushed aggregate
Why it is so important
A base layer that is too thin or poorly compacted leads to dents, waves, and waterlogging. At the same time, the gravel provides drainage. The complete construction is explained in the entry Sub-base Construction.
