Line Marking

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Line marking refers to the pitch markings on a sports field. On artificial turf, the lines are usually permanently tufted in or cut in.

On natural grass, lines are regularly repainted. On artificial turf, however, the line marking is usually permanently integrated into the surface.

Variants

  • tufted-in: the lines are tufted directly into the turf using colored yarn during manufacturing
  • cut-in (inlay): strips are cut out and replaced with colored artificial turf, joined using seam tape
  • temporary: special, washable paints for additional markings

Multiple Sports on One Surface

On multi-sport fields or shared youth fields, lines in different colors are combined. You can find the dimensions for football pitches in our guide Football Pitch Size.
