After tufting, the blades are only loosely held in the backing. It is the backing coating on the underside that permanently bonds them to the fabric.
Latex or PU?
- Latex: widely used and cost-effective.
- Polyurethane (PU): particularly moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable, often used for high-quality turf.
- Recyclable coatings: newer systems with single-material construction.
The coating significantly determines the tuft bind strength and thus the lifespan. For water drainage, it is either perforated or designed to be permeable – see Drainage.
