Tuft Bind (Tear-out Strength)

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Tuft bind refers to the force required to pull a cluster of blades out of the artificial turf. The higher the value, the more securely the blades are held in place.

The tufting process creates clusters of blades known as tufts. The tuft bind—referred to in German as tear-out strength or tuft withdrawal force—indicates in Newtons how firmly these clusters are anchored in the backing fabric. Measurement is carried out according to EN ISO 4919.

Factors it depends on

  • Quality and quantity of the back coating
  • Structure of the backing
  • Aging due to UV light and weathering

Why it is important

Low tuft bind results in blades coming loose—especially during sports, dogs playing, or brushing. Minimum values for sports surfaces are defined in the testing specifications. For garden lawns, look for brand-name products with verifiable manufacturer specifications.
