TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Silica Sand

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Silica sand is a fine, rounded sand made of quartz. It is used as an infill material in artificial turf to weigh down the surface and support the fibers.

Silica sand consists almost entirely of quartz grains. For artificial turf, washed, kiln-dried sand with a fine grain size is used so that it trickles easily between the fibers.

The Purpose of Silica Sand

  • Weights down the artificial turf and prevents slipping and rippling
  • Supports the fibers and improves resilience
  • Increases stability for sports surfaces

How Much Sand?

The amount depends on the product and ranges from no sand at all to several kilograms per square meter. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Many modern garden lawns require little or no sand. Learn more under Infill.
