Cork granules

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Cork granules are a natural infill material for artificial turf sports pitches and an alternative to plastic and rubber granules.

Cork granules are obtained from the bark of the cork oak. As an organic infill, they provide cushioning and excellent playing characteristics—without the use of plastic.

Benefits

  • Natural, renewable raw material
  • No microplastics
  • Heats up less in the sun than dark rubber granules

Disadvantages

  • Lightweight—can float during heavy rain and be blown away by wind
  • Must be regularly refilled and redistributed
  • Organic material ages and decomposes over time

Other alternatives include quartz sand or non-infill artificial turf systems. For the maintenance of infilled pitches, please see artificial turf cleaning.
