Artificial turf

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Artificial turf is the technical term used in standards for synthetic grass—especially on sports fields.

Artificial turf and synthetic grass mean the same thing: a surface made of plastic fibres tufted into a backing fabric. The term “artificial turf” is used mainly in standards and tender specifications, for example in DIN 18035-7 “Artificial turf surfaces”.

Other terms

  • Synthetic grass – the most common term
  • Grass carpet – usually used for simple, thin surfaces
  • AstroTurf – originally a brand name

How artificial turf is made is explained in the entry Tufting; the most important fibre material is polyethylene.
