TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Moss and algae

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Moss and algae can form on artificial turf when shade, moisture and organic deposits come together.

Moss does not grow on artificial turf itself – it settles in organic deposits such as decomposing leaves, soil and dust that remain between the blades. Shady, damp corners and areas without sufficient drainage are particularly affected.

Prevention

  • Remove leaves and dirt regularly
  • Brush the surface against the grain
  • Ensure a good slope and water drainage

Removal

Brush out light growth. In cases of heavy growth, machine deep cleaning is recommended, as it also removes deposits in the infill. More tips can be found in the guide Cleaning artificial turf.
