Artificial Grass Generations

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Artificial grass has evolved through several "generations" since the 1960s—from short, hard surfaces to soft, long fibers with infill material.

In the sports sector, a distinction is usually made between three artificial grass generations. This classification describes the technical progress from the first artificial turf to the present day.

Generation Features Typical Use
1st Generation (from the 1960s) short, hard fibers, mostly polyamide, unfilled first stadiums, e.g., AstroTurf
2nd Generation (from the 1970s) longer, often fibrillated fibers with sand infill hockey, tennis, all-weather courts
3rd Generation (from the 1990s) long, soft monofilament fibers with sand and elastic infill modern soccer

And today?

Current developments focus on systems without plastic granules, natural infill materials, and recyclable products—partly due to EU regulations on microplastics. Garden artificial grass such as Royal Grass® does not require plastic granules.
