TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Rotational resistance

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Rotational resistance indicates how strongly a sports surface resists the foot’s turning movement. It is important for playing feel and injury prevention.

When a player turns in studded boots, the surface resists this movement. Rotational resistance describes how great this force is. It is measured using a test foot with studs, which is loaded and rotated on the surface.

The right level

  • too high: the foot “sticks”, placing greater strain on the knees and ankles
  • too low: players slip and cannot find traction

Influencing factors

Key factors are the fibre type, pile height, and the amount and condition of the infill. Compacted or contaminated infill material changes the values. Rotational resistance is one of the test criteria in the FIFA Quality Programme. To learn how we keep artificial turf pitches in shape, see artificial turf cleaning.
