TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

EPDM Granules

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

EPDM granules are an elastic infill material made of synthetic rubber, primarily used on sports pitches.

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) is a synthetic rubber. As granules, it is spread as an elastic infill into artificial turf sports pitches to improve cushioning and playing characteristics.

Applications and Properties

EPDM granules are color-stable, weather-resistant, and available in various colors. They are primarily used for football and multi-sport pitches.

EPDM and Microplastics

Plastic and rubber granules that are loosely spread fall under the EU restriction for intentionally added microplastics. A transitional period applies to sports pitches. Many operators are therefore opting for alternatives such as cork, quartz sand, or unfilled systems.

Rubber granules are not necessary in private gardens: modern garden lawns manage without or with only quartz sand.
