Polyurethane (PU)

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Polyurethane is a versatile synthetic material. In artificial turf, it is used for backings, adhesives, elastic layers, and running track surfaces.

Polyurethane (PU) can be processed as hard, elastic, or liquid depending on the formulation. This is why it appears in many places within the sports and artificial turf sector.

Areas of Application

  • Backing: secures the fibers in the carrier fabric and is particularly moisture-resistant
  • Artificial turf adhesive: joins seams and edges with permanent elasticity
  • Binding agent: for elastic layers made of rubber granules
  • Running tracks and all-weather courts: as a synthetic surface, known as a Tartan track

PU surfaces are durable but benefit from regular cleaning – see synthetic floor cleaning.
