Play Sand

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Play sand is specially processed sand for playgrounds and sandboxes – rounded, fine-grained, washed, and free from sharp-edged components.

Play sand differs from building sand due to its rounded grain shape, a low proportion of fine particles (clay, loam), and careful processing. This keeps it moldable without sticking and gentle on the skin.

Requirements

  • washed and free from sharp-edged particles
  • highly water-permeable
  • as free as possible from harmful substances and contaminants

Care and Hygiene

Over time, glass, stones, leaves, and animal droppings get into the sand. In addition to replacement, mechanical sand surface cleaning has proven effective: it removes foreign objects to a greater depth and loosens the sand. See also Sand Surface Cleaning in the Glossary.
