Microplastics

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles. For artificial turf, the main concern is loose plastic granulate, which the EU is gradually restricting.

Microplastics refers to plastic particles smaller than five millimeters. In the context of artificial turf, loose plastic and rubber granulate used as infill is primarily under discussion because it can enter the environment through wind, rain, and players.

The EU Regulation

Since October 2023, the EU has restricted the placing on the market of intentionally added microplastics. For granulate used as infill material on sports fields, an eight-year transitional period applies. Existing fields may continue to be used, but new granulate will no longer be available after this period.

What This Means for Your Garden

Garden artificial turf is generally not affected by the regulation if it is installed without plastic granulate. Our Royal Grass® garden lawns can be installed without plastic granulate and are 100% recyclable.
