XPE Foam

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

XPE foam is a cross-linked polyethylene foam used as a cushioning underlay (shockpad) beneath artificial turf – for example, on playgrounds, sports fields, and terraces.

XPE stands for “cross-linked polyethylene”. As a closed-cell foam, XPE is lightweight, water-repellent, and elastic. Under artificial turf, it is used as a shockpad or cushioning mat.

What is XPE foam used for?

What to look for

For water to drain, the panels should be perforated or equipped with drainage channels. On large sports fields, an integrated elastic layer often handles this task. Learn more about construction and subsurfaces in the guide Artificial Turf Subsurface.
