TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Excavation

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

Excavation refers to the soil removed before laying the sub-base. For artificial grass in gardens, this is usually about 8–12 cm.

Before the sub-base can be laid, old turf, including roots and topsoil, must be removed. This removed soil is referred to as spoil.

How Deep and How Much?

For a garden sub-base, approximately 8–12 cm are usually excavated. For 50 m² at a depth of 10 cm, this calculates to 5 m³ of soil. Since loosened soil occupies more volume, slightly more material typically needs to be transported away.

Disposal

  • Topsoil can often be reused elsewhere in the garden
  • for larger quantities, plan for a container or collection service
  • dispose of construction debris and roots separately

All steps after excavation are explained in our installation guide.
