TOP GREEN Artificial Grass ProfessionalArtificial Grass Glossary

Carbon Footprint

Technical term from the TOP GREEN Artificial Grass Glossary – clearly explained based on over 25 years of experience.

Briefly explained

The carbon footprint describes how many greenhouse gases artificial turf generates over its entire life cycle – from production through transport and use to disposal.

The carbon footprint (also known as the CO₂ footprint) captures the greenhouse gas emissions of a product over its entire life cycle. With artificial turf, most emissions occur during the manufacturing of the plastic fibers and backing.

What Affects the Footprint

  • Material: plastics such as polyethylene are mostly produced from fossil raw materials
  • Lifespan: the longer a surface is used, the better the manufacturing impact is spread out
  • Use: unlike natural grass, artificial turf requires no mowing, fertilizing, or regular watering
  • Disposal: single-material products can be recycled instead of incinerated

Practical Tip

Anyone looking to improve their environmental footprint should opt for durable quality, a properly installed base, and good maintenance. Learn more in our guide How Long Does Artificial Turf Last?.
