In short

There is no single “best” artificial grass – the key factor is how you intend to use it. A high-quality artificial grass for the garden features soft polyethylene blades with thatch, a pile height suitable for its use, high stitch density, a water-permeable backing, UV-stable fibers with a long warranty, and is ideally recyclable. The most reliable way to decide is by comparing samples in natural daylight.

Not all artificial grass is created equal. There are worlds of difference between cheap hardware store products and premium options – in terms of appearance, feel, and lifespan. In this guide, we show you the most important buying criteria, how to recognize quality, and which artificial grass is best suited for which application.

Which pile height is right for which use?

UseRecommendation
Balcony, terrace, heavily used pathsRather short (approx. 20–25 mm) – easy to maintain and robust
Family garden with children and dogsMedium (approx. 25–35 mm) – good compromise between look and durability
Representative ornamental areasLong (from approx. 35 mm) – particularly lush appearance
Sports and playSpecial sports surfaces depending on the type of sport

Longer blades look lusher but require high density and good resilience so they do not lie flat.

How to recognize quality – five simple tests

  1. Rotation test: View the sample from different directions. Good artificial grass looks natural and non-shiny from every angle.
  2. Pressure test: Press the blades flat with your hand. High-quality fibers stand back up quickly.
  3. Check the back: The backing should be evenly coated and have drainage holes or a water-permeable coating.
  4. Pull test: Pull lightly on individual blades. They must not come loose – an indication of good tuft withdrawal strength.
  5. Daylight: Always compare samples outdoors. Colors look different in artificial light.

How to recognize cheap artificial grass

  • Single-colored, highly shiny blades without thatch
  • Very thin pile, the backing shows through
  • No or very short warranty on UV resistance
  • Missing information on material, density, and weight
  • Closed backing without water drainage

We explain the difference from simple coverings in detail in our guide Turf carpet or artificial grass?.

Modern fiber technologies

Premium manufacturers develop their own technologies for a more natural look and greater resilience. At Royal Grass®, these include, for example:

  • V-Shape® – a V-shaped fiber that stands back up after being stepped on
  • MiNT® – a matte fiber surface that reduces reflections
  • ReaDY® – fibers that fall naturally and irregularly

Checklist for buying artificial grass

  • Define use: Ornamental area, family garden, dog, balcony?
  • Request samples or view them in a display garden
  • Compare key figures: Pile height, stitch density, Dtex, pile weight
  • Check warranty and UV resistance
  • Ensure water-permeable backing
  • Inquire about recyclability
  • Plan for subbase and installation

Our advice

The best way to decide is with your own eyes and hands: In our display gardens, various Royal Grass® varieties are installed for outdoor viewing. In the product comparison, you will find all key figures at a glance – and we are happy to advise you personally.

Frequently asked questions about the best artificial grass

Which artificial grass is the best for the garden?

A soft artificial grass made of polyethylene with thatch, a pile height of about 25 to 35 millimeters, high stitch density, water-permeable backing, and a long UV warranty is suitable for the garden. It is important that the product matches your intended use.

How do I recognize good artificial grass?

Good artificial grass looks natural from every angle, the blades stand back up quickly after pressure, they cannot be pulled out, and the backing is evenly coated and water-permeable. This is complemented by verifiable manufacturer information and a long warranty.

Which artificial grass is best for dogs?

A robust, not too long artificial grass with a dense pile and good water drainage is suitable for dogs. A water-permeable subbase and regular rinsing and cleaning are also important.

How long does good artificial grass last?

High-quality artificial grass lasts for many years when professionally installed and maintained. Our Royal Grass products come with a 15-year warranty.
