In short
Artificial grass looks real when it mimics the irregularities of natural grass: multiple shades of green, brown or beige thatch at the base of the blades, matte fibers without shine, an appropriate pile height, and high density. Just as important is the installation: consistent installation direction, invisible seams, and clean edges.
The wish of many garden owners: artificial grass that visitors only recognize as such upon second glance. This is possible today – provided the product and installation are right. Here we show you what matters.
The five features of natural-looking artificial grass
| Feature | Why it is important | Learn more |
|---|---|---|
| Color mix | Natural grass is never a single color – light and dark shades of green look vibrant | Yarn |
| Thatch | Curled, brownish fibers imitate dead grass at the base | Thatch |
| Matte surface | Shiny fibers give away synthetic material immediately | MiNT® |
| Fiber shape | Special profiles stand upright and break the light naturally | Fiber shape |
| Density | A dense pile prevents the backing from showing through | Stitch density |
Which pile height looks most natural?
A well-maintained garden lawn is usually a few centimeters high. Artificial grass with a pile height in the medium range therefore often looks the most realistic. Very short surfaces are more reminiscent of sports fields or grass carpets, while very long ones can look untidy if they are not dense enough.
The installation is a deciding factor
- All sections in the same installation direction – otherwise visible color differences occur
- Cut seams cleanly and join them with seam tape
- Finish edges at flower beds and paths cleanly – see edging
- Level sub-base without dents or ripples
- Brush up the blades against the grain after installation
Note: Many types of artificial grass look slightly darker and more vibrant when viewed against the pile. Therefore, plan the installation direction so that you look at your desired aesthetic from the house or terrace.
Looking real even after years
- UV-stable fibers that do not fade – see UV resistance
- Regular brushing to keep the blades standing upright
- Remove leaves and debris before they settle in
Our year-round maintenance plan shows you how to keep artificial grass in shape permanently.
Modern technologies for more naturalness
Royal Grass® relies on its own fiber technologies such as V-Shape® for resilience, MiNT® for a matte surface, and ReaDY® for a natural, irregular fall of the fibers.
Our advice
The best way to see if artificial grass looks real is outside in daylight – not in photos. Visit our show gardens or request a sample. All purchase criteria can be found in the guide Which artificial grass is the best?.
Frequently Asked Questions: Artificial grass that looks real
Which artificial grass looks the most real?
Artificial grass with multiple shades of green, brownish thatch, matte fibers, medium pile height, and high density looks the most natural. A clean installation with a uniform installation direction and invisible seams is also crucial.
Why does my artificial grass look fake?
Common causes include single-colored or shiny fibers, a pile that is too thin, visible seams, different installation directions of the sections, or an uneven sub-base.
What is thatch in artificial grass?
Thatch consists of curled, usually brownish or beige fibers at the base of the blades. They imitate dead grass in a real lawn, support the blades, and provide a more natural look.
Does artificial grass still look real after years?
High-quality artificial grass with UV-stable fibers remains colorfast for a long time. Regular brushing and cleaning ensure that the blades stand upright and the surface looks natural.
