In the long jump and triple jump, athletes land in a long jump pit filled with sand. To ensure a safe landing, the sand must be sufficiently deep, loose, and free of foreign objects.
Typical problems
- compacted sand that does not cushion falls well
- stones, glass, and litter that cause injuries
- leaves, weeds, and contamination from animals
Maintenance
Before training, the sand should be dug over or loosened and raked level. Regular machine cleaning is recommended to sieve out foreign objects and aerate the sand—see sand surface cleaning for more information. See also beach volleyball court.
