In short
How long artificial grass lasts depends mainly on quality, use, sub-base and maintenance. Basic DIY-store grass carpets outdoors often last only a few years. High-quality garden artificial grass is designed for many years of use – our Royal Grass® products come with a 15-year warranty. Heavily used sports fields wear out faster than private gardens.
Artificial grass is an investment that should pay off for many years. But how can you tell whether a product will last, and what can you do yourself to extend its lifespan? Here you will find the key influencing factors and tips.
Lifespan at a glance
| Type | Typical lifespan | Influencing factors |
|---|---|---|
| Basic grass carpet | typically only a few years | low UV stability, thin pile |
| High-quality garden artificial grass | many years, often with a long warranty | Quality, sub-base, maintenance |
| Sports artificial turf pitch | depends on intensity of use and maintenance | Load, infill, deep cleaning |
What affects lifespan
1. Material and fibre quality
Blades made from high-quality polyethylene with good UV resistance hardly fade even after many summers. Robust fibre shapes and good resilience ensure that the blades stand back up after being compressed.
2. Backing and anchoring
A solid backing coating holds the blades firmly in place. High tuft bind prevents individual blades from coming loose under load.
3. Sub-base
A level, compacted and permeable sub-base prevents waterlogging, dents and wrinkling. Mistakes here significantly shorten lifespan – see more in our guide Artificial Grass Sub-base.
4. Use
A decorative area ages more slowly than a play lawn for children and dogs. Constant point loads from furniture, pools or trampolines also put more strain on the pile.
5. Maintenance
Regular brushing, removing leaves and occasional cleaning keep the fibres upright and prevent moss, compaction and odours.
How to extend the lifespan
- Remove leaves and organic material promptly
- Brush walkways and resting areas regularly against the grain
- Move furniture and play equipment occasionally
- Keep barbecues, fire bowls and cigarettes away from the artificial grass (fire behaviour)
- Do not use solvents, oils or aggressive cleaners
- For sports surfaces: check infill and have professional deep cleaning carried out
How can you tell that artificial grass needs to be replaced?
- Blades stay permanently flat and no longer stand up even after brushing
- noticeable fading or brittle fibres
- Blades come loose from the backing over large areas
- Seams keep coming apart
- Water no longer drains away despite cleaning
Old coverings should be disposed of properly – single-material products can be recycled.
Our advice
Lifespan is decided at the time of purchase. Look for transparent manufacturer information and a long warranty – and have the sub-base installed professionally. What to look for when buying is explained in our guide Which artificial grass is the best?.
Frequently asked questions about the durability of artificial grass
How long does artificial grass last in the garden?
High-quality garden artificial grass lasts for many years when installed and maintained professionally. Our Royal Grass products come with a 15-year warranty. Basic grass carpets outdoors, however, often last only a few years.
Does artificial grass fade in the sun?
High-quality artificial grass contains UV stabilisers and remains colourfast for many years. Cheaper products without sufficient UV protection, however, can fade after just a few summers.
What shortens the lifespan of artificial grass?
Above all, a poor sub-base with waterlogging, lack of maintenance, organic deposits, heat from barbecues or fire, and aggressive cleaning agents.
How long does an artificial turf pitch last?
That depends heavily on intensity of use, the system and maintenance. Regular maintenance and professional deep cleaning make a significant contribution to preserving playing characteristics for a long time.
