In short
Artificial grass does not need to be watered to stay green. However, water is useful in three cases: for cooling on hot days, for cleaning dust and pollen, and for rinsing areas used by pets. The cooling effect only lasts as long as the water is evaporating. For a permanent solution, shade and thoughtful garden planning are necessary.
“Do you have to water artificial grass?” – the short answer is no. Nevertheless, there are good reasons to occasionally reach for the garden hose. Here you will find out when watering makes sense and how to keep artificial grass pleasantly cool in summer.
When is watering useful?
| Occasion | Effect | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Heat | Evaporation cools the surface | Effect is only temporary |
| Dust and pollen | Fibers become clean, color looks fresher | Ideally in the morning or evening |
| Pets | Urine is diluted and rinsed away | See Artificial Grass and Dogs |
| Sports | Part of the system on certain pitches | e.g., irrigated hockey pitches |
Why does artificial grass get warm in the sun?
Synthetic fibers store heat and – unlike living grass – do not cool through evaporation. In direct sunlight, the surface temperature can therefore be significantly higher than the air temperature. Light shades, thatch, and good ventilation can slightly mitigate the effect, but it cannot be avoided entirely.
How to keep artificial grass cool
- Create shade: Trees, sun sails, pergolas, or awnings provide a permanent solution
- Briefly hose down: Cool with a garden hose before use
- Test: Check with your hand before walking barefoot and before children or pets use the area
- Planning: Place play and lounging areas in the shade on very sunny surfaces
- Avoid reflections: Glass surfaces and windows can bundle sunlight and cause artificial grass to overheat in specific spots
Correct watering
- Best in the morning or early evening
- Use a spray nozzle or sprinkler, not a concentrated jet from a short distance
- Only enough to wet the surface – the water must be able to drain away
- Briefly brush up afterwards if necessary
For water to drain quickly, a water-permeable structure is required – find out more in the guide Is artificial grass water-permeable?.
Sprinkler system for artificial grass?
A permanently installed irrigation system is generally not necessary for private gardens. However, on large, heavily used areas in sunny locations or for pet owners, it can increase comfort. Important: Place sprinklers so that they do not create tripping hazards and do not damage the surface.
Our advice
Plan for shaded areas during the garden design phase – this is the most effective heat protection. We are happy to advise you on Royal Grass® and the design of your surface. Further care tips in the Year-round care plan.
Frequently asked questions about watering artificial grass
Do you have to water artificial grass?
No, artificial grass does not need water to stay green. Watering is only useful to cool the surface on hot days, rinse away dust and pollen, or clean areas used by pets.
How hot does artificial grass get in summer?
In direct sunlight, artificial grass can become significantly warmer than the air and natural grass. How much depends on solar radiation, color, material, and surroundings. Shade and a brief hosing down help.
How long does the cooling from water last?
Only until the water has evaporated. On very hot days, this can happen quickly. Shade from trees, sun sails, or awnings provides a permanent effect.
Does water damage artificial grass?
No, water does not damage high-quality artificial grass as long as it can drain through the water-permeable backing and the sub-base. You should only avoid using a concentrated jet from a short distance.
