Hybrid turf: What is it, and who is it worth it for?

What is hybrid turf? Structure, systems, comparison with natural and artificial turf, and which facilities the combination of real grass and synthetic fibres is suitable for.

In brief

Hybrid turf is real natural turf reinforced with integrated synthetic fibres. The grass roots anchor to the fibres, making the turf sward significantly more resilient and keeping it closed even under intensive use. Hybrid turf is used primarily in professional stadiums and heavily used sports facilities. Unlike artificial turf, it must be maintained like natural turf.

Hybrid turf combines the playing characteristics of natural turf with the stability of synthetic fibres. But how does the system work, who is it worth it for, and how does it differ from artificial turf? Here are the key answers.

How does hybrid turf work?

There are two basic construction methods:

SystemConstructionTypical use
Stitched fibres (stitched)Synthetic fibres are mechanically inserted vertically into the turf rootzone layerStadiums, main pitches
Carrier mat (carpet)A synthetic mat with fibres is laid, infilled and seededNew builds, training pitches

In both cases, real grass grows between the fibres. The roots wrap around the synthetic fibres, anchoring the turf sward deeper and more securely in the ground.

Who is hybrid turf suitable for?

  • Professional and Bundesliga stadiums with high expectations for playing feel
  • Main pitches where a natural-turf look is desired
  • Facilities with professional greenkeeping support

For most clubs, schools and municipalities with many training hours, an artificial turf pitch is the more economical solution. You can find an overview of all pitch types in the guide Football pitch: surfaces and construction.

Hybrid turf in the garden?

For private gardens, hybrid turf is practically irrelevant: installation requires specialist machinery, and maintenance is the same as for natural turf. If you are looking for a hard-wearing, low-maintenance surface in your garden, you are better advised to choose high-quality artificial turf – see Garden lawn or artificial turf?.

Frequently asked questions about hybrid turf

What is hybrid turf?

Hybrid turf is natural turf reinforced with integrated synthetic fibres. The grass roots anchor to the fibres, making the turf sward more stable and resilient.

What is the difference between hybrid turf and artificial turf?

Hybrid turf consists mostly of real grass reinforced with synthetic fibres and must be maintained like natural turf. Artificial turf consists entirely of synthetic fibres, requires neither water nor mowing, and can be used much more intensively.

Where is hybrid turf used?

Primarily in professional stadiums and on main pitches with high expectations for a natural playing feel and professional pitch maintenance.

Does hybrid turf need to be mown?

Yes. Since hybrid turf consists mostly of real grass, it must be mown, fertilised and watered like natural turf.
